I want our community to know that with the recent events and the senseless act of violence that occurred at Apalachee High School, I feel it is important to reassure our staff, students, families, and the Commerce Community as a whole that we are in constant contact with our local police, local sheriff, and state agencies when we receive any online threats. We have been aware of the many threats that cowards are making towards schools and students, and it is unacceptable. Although we have not found any of the threats credible, I do believe it is vital to our success to investigate each one fully to ensure our most precious resources safety in our buildings. I have requested an extra police presence the last few days, and I am grateful for acting Chief Hicks and his staff for providing many officers inside and outside our schools along with other emergency personnel. Safety is, and always will be, our top priority in Commerce City Schools. I appreciate the outpouring of support from our community, and I know that we will defeat evil by not allowing evil to dictate our focus. Have an amazing weekend and God Bless Tiger Strong, Billy Kirk, Superintendent Commerce City Schools

Teacher Feature: this week's Feature Teacher is Ms. Patty Crumbley! Ms. Crumbley is one of our 5th grade ELA teachers along with being ELA Department Chair for CMS! Ms. Crumbley did an excellent job today with her students practicing commas, doing a read-aloud where students summarized the reading, and worked independently on vocabulary. Ms. Crumbley is originally from Orlando and has been on 2 separate tv shows. She's a thrill-seeker with a love of rollercoasters, zip lining, and kayaking. Her favorite part of teaching ( and her students!) is the daily teacher read-aloud because it bonds the teacher, students, and book together with the act of reading. If you see Ms. Crumbley out in the community please thank her for all she does for CMS and students!

Fly a Flag in our Field of Flags this Veterans Day Each flag in the Field of Flags honors a different hero. And behind each flag is a unique story—a story about courage and freedom. A story about sacrifice. A story worth honoring. This Veterans Day, Commerce Middle School students will set up a field of American flags, all to honor local veterans and raise critical funds to support our ill and injured heroes. Each flag is a donation of $10 to represent one veteran—and our unwavering commitment to serving all veterans after they’ve sacrificed so much for our country. All donations will raise critical funds to support Disabled American Veterans (DAV) life changing services for veterans in need and their families. Will you fly a flag to honor veterans? Click on the link below to add your flag to our field today! https://support.dav.org/index.cfm?fuseaction=donorDrive.participant&participantID=18758

This week's Feature Teacher is Ms. Kristina Satterfield! Ms. Satterfield is our 8th Grade math teacher and also serves as Yearbook Editor. Ms. Sattefield graduated from Jackson Co. HS in 2010. She has a B.S. from the University of North Georgia and a M.S. from Piedmont College. Ms. Satterfield shared that when she is not teaching she is a 'foodie' at heart and enjoys sampling a variety of cuisines, hiking, and photography. She is most proud of students saying that she makes math seem easy and engaging. Today I visited her room and students were actively solving multi-step linear equations. Students were using multiple whiteboards collaboratively to work out problems and discuss their reasoning. If you see Ms. Satterfield in the community, please thank her for all she does for the students at CMS!

This year we are bringing back an old favorite, Weekly Teacher Feature, to celebrate all of our staff. We have not done it in 5 years so it is time for an update on the wonderful staff we have here at CMS. We will feature every teacher at CMS during the school year. This week's Feature Teacher is Mrs. Lydia Peterman! Mrs. Peterman is our 7th Grade Language Arts teacher and this is her 4th year at CMS. Mrs. Peterman holds a B.S. from Piedmont University and an M.S. from Brenau University. Some interesting things about Mrs. Peterman is she LOVES the color red and has taught every grade except pre-K and 12th. Her hobbies include antiquing, thrifting, and she plans parties at a local wedding venue on the side. She focuses on building positive relationships so students know she is invested in them. I visited her classroom today and saw students annotating texts to better comprehend content. If you see Mrs. Peterman in the community, please thank her for all she does for the students at CMS!
